Planning Poker

Planning Poker

Postby nicodb on Tue 19 Jan 2010 19:53

I don't quite follow the rationale behind planning poker (in terms of icescrum's GUI, not the planning poker estimation process itself).
How do I tell the UI what User Story is being estimated?
How can I prevent team members to see each others' estimation? The idea behind delphi-based estimation processes is not to influence other people's vote... Something like a timer would be nice (such as the one provided in planningpoker.com).
I'm I missing something or is this a work in progress feature?

Thanks in advance!
Merci beaucoup pour votre réponse!

Hi nicodb,

The planning poker in Icescrum² works as followed :
  • The team members and the Product Owner connect on the Planning poker board.
  • The Product Owner can start the "game" by clicking on the "Start game" button on the right of the window :

  • If there are already some values on the board before the game has started, click on "Start game" and then on "Stop" to reinitialize the game.
  • When the game start, the first story that is not estimated in the product backlog is displayed on the left of the window :

  • Then, the team members have to vote (there is no timer, but you can try to synchronize with the chatroom : if you open the chat and then switch to the planning poker board, a minimized view of the chat will show itself on the left).
  • When the estimated value is decided (every members participating in the game must have voted for the game to continue), the Product owner confirms by selecting the specified value. Two additional buttons then appears: "Next" and "Vote again". Please note that the story's estimation is not automatically set to the value selected by the PO at this point!

  • If the estimation is decided, the Product Owner now has to drag the card with the chosen value on the story :

  • Clicking on the "Next" button will switch the current story to the next one (ordered by priority), clicking on "Vote again" will reinitialize the current vote.

Well, we'll probably have to rework on the planning poker system in IS², but it can help if you don't have a planning poker deck in hand or if the team members are scattered everywhere :)

Regards,
Manu

Hi Manu,

Thank you (and whole IceScrum team) very much for this great tool.

Concerning planning poker - one of the key point of the poker is an ability for each player to take decision independently. Each player taking decision doesn't see estimated cost of other players while cards are not shown. Seems, your implementation doesn't follow this rule.

As for me it would be better to indicate players (e.g., changing card color instead of showing estimated cost), that already have taken a decision, and all estimated costs will be shown as soon as last player has taken a decision.

BTW, is there any public roadmap for IceScrum?

Merci...

Hello pylyplv,

It's a great idea, we are working on a totally new version of iceScrum.. I will put your suggestion in our backlog ;-)

Actually there isn't public roadmap, maybe soon..

Thanks for your support !

Hello Vincent,

I hope, you also use Scrum for icescrum development, so "totally new version" will be available soon ;-).

Thank you for your job and good luck :-)
